Learned freelance and industry standards.
This is all information I’ve learned that should be common knowledge and intend on not gatekeeping for others to better themselves in this career. Considering I’m currently self-managed with a mother agent, I have to advocate for myself, but also for others.
There is an understanding that if a photographer is to inquire to shoot with you, it’s based on them wanting you for what you have to offer and on your agreed upon comfort and terms in being paid to shoot. You have the authority over choice of charging your specific rates or deciding to collaborate on the project. It should also be expected that if the photographer hires you to shoot, it’s expected that you may not receive those photos. Them sending them to you is a courtesy as you were paid.
This applies if you are to inquire to work with the photographer for their services and style of photography. They, then have the authority to charge you or decide on collaboration. If you hire them, it should be discussed what is being offered in the payment discussed and what return on investment to hiring them will provide you.
If deciding on collaboration, you are both agreeing to spend time on the photoshoot. make sure to discuss comfort and levels of what level to go to for collaboration. You’re both spending money between location sourcing, wardrobe, concept, time, editing and travel. Up to that point, which the mutual understanding is that you both should have equal rights to the photos. Upon not receiving photos after an extended period of time, reach out to the photographer. If being with held discuss options to move forward.
This is all unwritten rules and truly just common sense I’ve developed in this career. It’s not all completely correct, so don’t hold me to what I’ve expressed. This is to help with a better understanding of those just getting started or are looking for further insight.
